The World’s Ugliest Dog

In a world obsessed with beauty, who knew that being a minger could win you celebrity status! Well, that is exactly what happens if your dog wins the ‘Ugliest Dog in the World’ competition.

The competition, which unbelievably is in its 26th, year was hosted last month at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in California. This years winner was Peanut, a dog who can only be described as a cross between Yoda and a gremlin.

However, it appears that looks really do deceive. Two year old Peanut with his unidentified heritage, wild fur, bulging eyes and protruding teeth, may have a face that only a mother could love, but his unusual features are the result of animal abuse as a puppy where he was injured in a fire which deformed his eyelids and lips. He spent 9 months in a shelter before Holly Chandler fell in love and adopted him.

“He no longer has lips,” Says Holly. “His eyelids are also gone, so he can’t close his eyes, therefore his eyes water. The tears drain into his nose and so he has nice little snot bubbles because of it. Its great, it adds to his character.”

Many of the dogs in the competition have been rescued from puppy mills and shelters, and rather than make fun of their unusual appearance, the competition has done much to raise awareness for the adoption of dogs. It also proves that beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder showing that these less-than-traditionally beautiful pets, are loving companions to their devoted owners.

These pug ugly dogs certainly appear to enjoy the adoration of the fans, and the owners love the celebrity status that the position brings. Peanut, like the winners before him, was paraded around the US chat shows, as well as featuring in US magazines following the win.
