The beautiful leggy Azawakh stands proud with an almost regal presence and displays a beautiful floating gait when he moves which is breathtaking to see. His thin skin clings tightly to his naturally slender body which is covered by a short, thin coat that comes in a variety of colors, including clear sand through to dark red, white, black, blue, gray, brindle, grizzle and all shades of brown, including chocolate. Some Azawakhs also have a black mask or white markings on the legs, chest and tail tip.

The Azawakh is an intelligent and loyal dog with a strong protective streak. They are gentle and affectionate towards their families, however they can be standoffish toward strangers and are not fond of being touched by people who they don’t know. Because they are sighthounds, they are attracted by motion and are likely to chase anything that moves including, people on skateboards, bikes or even running children. They may even forget that the small pets in the house are their palls when they see them running around outside. That said, they do make excellent companions for joggers and runners and when indoors, they are fairly inactive and are content to lounge on the couch. Because this is such a rare breed, you will generally have to wait to locate a puppy, and when you do find one, make sure he comes to you at an early age as it’s not easy to re-home an older Azawakh as his complex personality means he has difficulty adjusting.
